Maker’s mark: Roycroft “Early Mark”

These finely hammered copper bookends, attributed to designer Victor Toothaker for Roycroft, date to around 1914–1915. Each features a serene etched scene of a cabin nestled by a lakeside in the arched upper panel, framed by simple tooled borders. The rich, medium brown patina and hand-hammered texture are hallmarks of Roycroft craftsmanship.
The Roycroft community, founded by Elbert Hubbard in East Aurora, New York, championed the Arts and Crafts ideals of integrity, simplicity, and the celebration of handmade objects. This pair of bookends captures both the movement’s reverence for nature and its commitment to transforming everyday objects into enduring works of art.
